With competition coming from every angle, independent jewelers work hard every day to keep the Goliaths at bay. Considered the modern day Davids of our time, smaller retailers scrape for every advantage, work twice as hard for competitive pricing and pay more based on smaller volume than larger chains. Add to that Internet sales, the gemstone TV channels and a depressed economy and you wonder how most of the little guys survive.
It’s not easy out there, but one manufacturer wants to change that. Working hard to deliver quality promotional pieces at a highly competitive price is what Key Items was created to do.
Founded for the sole purpose of giving the little guy a leg up, Key Items has been in business for 12 years and specializes in those pieces that draw customers into major retail stores.
“If a major retailer is running an item, more than likely we’ll have it in stock at a highly competitive price,” states Mitch Jain, vice president of the company. “We don’t sell to the majors. We want to stick to serving the small to medium sized chains and independent retailers with the products to compete with the majors.”
Key Items, Inc., founded in 1996, is owned by Kushal Sacheti, who also owns Galaxy USA, Inc. – a New York based loose diamond company of 23 years. Mr. Sacheti has built his business with the smaller retailers in mind and a customer-first attitude. With the strength of its global sourcing alliances, its overseas manufacturing facilities, and a solid US headquarter in New York, Key Items is a company that strategically remains small in order to maintain quality.
“We are small which means we devote more time to each item we manufacture. This improves our quality and keeps our customer service level very high,” states Mitch.
Manufacturing everything from earrings to necklaces, pendants to rings, Key Items is usually one step ahead in producing the latest promotional piece. If retailers call with an item not currently in inventory the company will jump on the chance to save the sale.
“If we have it in inventory, we can ship same day. If we don’t have it in stock we have designers, model makers and production capability to meet the retailer’s needs in a timely manner.”
Key Items carries over 3000 different pieces in-stock at all times to serve the needs of it’s customers. Stones range in quality from SI to I2, and the company is meticulous about matching stones within a piece. Mitch has this to say about their quality: “Our stones are hand picked. We insist on bright stones with a lot of fire and we spend a great deal of time ensuring they match and that we produce a quality product.”
In essence Key Items wants to provide independents and regional chains with quality product at pricing that keeps them in the ball game. Producing items that are manufactured well and have a high perceived value is the cornerstone of the company. They take the bite out of volume-based pricing brackets in order to serve small retailers.
“We understand small retailers. We know they may only need to buy two or three pieces at a time. They should be able to do that and remain competitive,” says Mitch. “That’s where we come in.”
