It’s seeing the glass half full. Last October, while many stores were cutting back or on hold after a year plagued by economic downturn, Shaheer Hosh took the plunge and opened an elegant new jewelry boutique featuring high-end designer jewelry in upscale Boca Raton, FL. “The economy has opened up great opportunities in location and real estate that would not normally be available,” Shaheer explains. Viewing the glass half full, he took advantage of emerging new possibilities and acted. Business has been strong and the future is looking bright. “We’re doing great!”
D Stern Jewelers (dsternjewelers.com) is a gem of a store in trendy, upscale Mizner Park which caters to the younger crowd in eastern Boca. The interior of the 1250 square foot store was designed and created in Milan, Italy, then shipped and re-assembled in the US. Its smart design layout features one long curve reaching from the front windows to the back offices. The walls are covered in custom, rich wood paneling punctuated with lighted glass alcoves. Butter soft Italian leather showcases and amber-colored hand-blown Chilhuly-style glass sculptural chandeliers create a warm, inviting ambience.

This February, D Stern Jewelers hosted a very successful Valentine’s Day Trunk Show featuring Mia Katrin for Jewel Couture LLC and Bellarri. Throngs of local clients and tourists came to spend an enjoyable evening out in the festive atmosphere of Mizner Park, dining in one of the tantalizing area restaurants and browsing the colorful boutiques in the outdoor mall. Lots of walk-in traffic is regularly generated till late in the evenings. The Trunk Show celebration was enhanced with champagne and strawberries for guests. Clients often lingered long after their purchase, enjoying the warm, festive environment.
Shaheer and his wife Gloria moved from New York City to Sarasota FL, Gloria’s home town, in 1995. He worked for a prominent jewelry store, designing, manufacturing and selling. In 2001, David Stern invited Shaheer to become general manager for David Stern Designing Jewelers in Boca Raton. The destination store in traditional, western Boca has a reputation for custom jewelry. When new real estate options emerged from the economy last year, Stern and Hosh grasped the opportunity, cross-marketing the Stern name, opening the complementary boutique in new Mizner Park.
The luxurious interior of D Stern Jewelers was designed and created in Milan, Italy then shipped and reassembled on site.
“My degree is in architectural and civil engineering,” Shaheer explains, but “my grandparents were in the jewelry business and it is in my blood. When I immigrated to the United States, my first job after three days in New York City was to work in a fine jewelry store in Manhattan. After six months, I was promoted to store manager. I learned the art and trade of making jewelry from a Greek master jeweler educated in Italy.” Shaheer also studied diamonds and other aspects of the trade through GIA courses.
“I have a passion for design. My background in architectural engineering translates into jewelry design. My facility in sketching a 3D ring design for a client is based on a background in architectural rendering. They’re both modes of design.”
D Stern Jewelers features designer jewelry, including American and international designers, especially Italian. “We cater to tourists who are familiar with and attracted to the designer lines. It adds additional appeal.”
Shaheer and his wife Gloria, along with their two sons, Constantine, 13, and Christopher, 4, are optimistic about the future. “People are always telling me I have a positive attitude, I’m optimistic.” It takes just such an optimist to find the silver lining in times of change and explore the golden opportunities they provide.
A difficult real estate market created the opportunity for D Stern Jewelers to open their store in a great location.
