Finishing touches are being put on the 2014 Texas Jewelers Association (TJA) Convention, to be held September 27 - 30 in San Antonio. This year the TJA, together with the Israeli Diamond Industry (IDI), will host the 1st annual Texas-Israel Diamond Show, scheduled for September 29 - 30.
The St. Anthony Hotel, located on the San Antonio Riverwalk, will be home to the event. Currently undergoing a $24 million renovation - scheduled to be completed and ready for attendees to enjoy during the convention - the St. Anthony Hotel is a National Historic Landmark, Completed in 1909, the St. Anthony still has much of the period detail preserved.
The convention line-up begins on Saturday, September 27, with two sessions of Jewelers of America’s renowned Sales & Management Professional Certification exams. The certification testing will be followed by a TJA board meeting, and the President’s Party Saturday evening, hosted by TJA President Robert Harrison.
The Sunday schedule includes seminars and TJA vendor exhibits in the morning, followed by the TJA Gala Dinner, to take place on the Starlight Terrace at the St. Anthony, and sponsored by the Israeli Diamond Industry.
Terry Chandler, President & CEO of the Diamond Council of America will open the Sunday session with “Diamond Basics,” a seminar on diamond trends & overviews, wants & needs of bridal customers.
Following Terry’s presentation, attendees will have a chance to pick up “Top Social Media Tips for a Successful In-Store Event,” from Shellie Bill, Co-Founder of Premier Consulting Innovations.
Later that day, Ira Savoie, owner of Savoie Fine Jewelry Appraisers will present his seminar, “The Gemstone Detectives.” Ira will cover the critical importance of great observational skills, and how invaluable these are to jewelers and appraisers in their work. Attendees will learn that knowing how to distinguish between a synthetic and natural gemstone is just the beginning of being a true “Gemstone Detective.”
Sunday’s educational schedule will end on a high-note, with a two-hour learning session. “The Secrets They Won’t Tell You: What Makes the Top 2% of Jewelers Successful,” led by Dr. Linda Talley, will discuss how to leverage your leadership style, communicate with staff, develop your organizational culture and ensure accountability. Dr. Talley teaches that great leadership is enhanced by an understanding of the psychological principles of ethical leader development. This program introduces attendees to the psychology of leadership and the development of emerging leaders which provides a pragmatic approach to leadership. The program will provide you ways of leading and thriving in spite of the change occurring in our economy.
Monday’s schedule features 3 educational events, beginning with a presentation for owners and managers from Susan Desmond, Shareholder at Jackson, Lewis PC on “How to Document Employee Discipline That Will Stand Up in Court.” Susan knows that no employer enjoys disciplining employees, and because of that, documentation frequently suffers as a result. Documenting employee discipline is one of the most important tasks an employer must do. Juries expect documentation. Good documentation will help you win a lawsuit in court. This presentation will walk you through what should be in your documentation by going through real life scenarios and will give you case examples of what the employer did right and what the employer did wrong.
Dr. Linda Talley is back on Monday with her presentation designed for office staff, sales associates and bench jewelers on “Business Finesse: Dealing With Difficult Encounters in Retail!” Dealing with difficult situations is critical to your survival and growth, yet sometimes you are ready to throw in the towel. Wait! There is a better way - it’s called Business Finesse, and it’s a skill that anybody can learn. You can communicate in a way that helps you resolve the problem and retain your relationship with those necessary to your survival.
The TJA Convention seminar schedule concludes late Monday afternoon with Brad Huisken of IAS Training presenting “25 Powerful Ways To Maximize Your Sales.” Brad will lead attendees through a fun and motivational seminar detailing 25 Powerful Ways to Maximize Your Sales. In today’s retail environment, when people come into a retail store, they are not necessarily looking for your products, they are looking for a place and a person from whom to buy the products.
The show floor opens on Monday with a full day of exhibits (9am - 6pm) from both TJA vendors and a large contingency of diamond vendors from IDI. Goods available from exhibiting IDI members include loose diamonds of all sizes and shapes, including colored diamonds, as well as a wide selection of mounted goods. Take advantage of this pre-holiday opportunity to shop for your special customers, stock up on basics, and make new vendor contacts.
Attendees at Monday’s event are invited to stay and enjoy a Texas-style BBQ Dinner, hosted by IDI on Monday evening on the Starlight Terrace.
The TJA Event will conclude on Tuesday, September 30, with show floor exhibits and vendors available from 9am - 6pm.
