Star Sosa, owner of Spectrum Art & Jewelry in Wilmington, NC accepted the prestigious award for “Superlative Design and Innovation” at the conference of the Independent Jeweler’s Organization (IJO) held recently in Minneapolis, MN. Sosa was elected for this national award from a pool of more than 850 IJO retail jeweler members, and the criterion for this honor was demonstration of “consistent artistic and innovative design ability.”
Spectrum Art & Jewelry is known as a custom jewelry studio boasting collectors across the U.S. Sosa’s designs lean towards a Mediterranean influence. “I love the art and architecture of Italy, Greece and Egypt,” she explains. “I also love Art Deco styles and unexpected juxtapositions of color, shape and form, and am particularly a fan of yellow gold – both 18k and 22k.”
Working alongside Star for the past year is contemporary jewelry artist, Susan Drake. Susan draws from a wide range of concepts that span from soft, organic and curvy to linear architectural forms. In the short time she has been a featured designer at Spectrum, Susan has attracted quite a devoted following for her sculptural and modern jewelry designs.
These two artists have amassed an impressive number of design awards, including seven American Gem Trade Association Spectrum Awards, the New Mexico Jewelers of America Design Award, two Top Retailer of American Craft Awards, Top Retailer Best Website Award and an MJSA Vision Award.
“We strive for innovative and creative design in every piece of jewelry. Since so much of our business is based on custom design, there is also the element of collaboration with the client. This spirit of cooperation and exploration is one thing that really makes us stand out in our community,” Sosa stated. “I have committed myself to be the best at what I do, and to be recognized in this way is wonderfully validating.”
“When one sees the incredibly beautiful jewelry created by Star and Susan, one knows automatically that they are the cream of the crop,” says IJO President Jeffrey Roberts. “Despite their vast knowledge, expertise and talent, they are constantly striving to learn more. I’m literally astounded by the number of awards and testimonials presented on their behalf. Their design capability is diverse as well as exquisite, and I’m very proud to have Spectrum Art & Jewelry as part of the IJO family. I heartily congratulate them on this fine achievement.”
