(NEW YORK) - Jewelers of America (JA), the national trade association for businesses serving the fine jewelry retail marketplace, has announced new additions to its staff and strategic changes to current departments.

The association has hired Matthew Tratner as Director of Membership & Sales. In this newly created position, Tratner will oversee the operations of the Membership Department, including membership development and retention. Tratner brings to JA a background in jewelry sales that gives him an understanding of the needs and challenges of both JA’s retail and supplier members. Previously, he was COO and Partner at GemsAround.com, a designer jewelry e-commerce website, where his responsibilities included overseeing production and developing relationships with designer brands. Prior to that, he spent seven years in sales and operations at Maya J Diamond Jewelry, a New York-based diamond jewelry manufacturer. Tratner is also a GIA Accredited Jewelry Professional.

Houston BBB recognizes Jewelry Judge Ben Gordon with Pinnacle Award

(HOUSTON) - Jewelry Judge Ben Gordon received the 2013 Pinnacle Award for Excellence at the Houston Better Business Bureau Awards for Excellence luncheon held in May. 

The Better Business Bureau of Houston receives hundreds of applications for its coveted Awards for Excellence from local area businesses each year.  The Pinnacle Award recognizes businesses and non-profits for their achievements and commitment to excellence in the workplace.

Old Northeast Jewelers welcomes a 4th GG

(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) -  Old Northeast Jewelers recently announced a new addition to their staff of jewelry experts.  Steven Pearl is a 1999 Gemological Institute of America Graduate Gemologist, bringing twelve years of experience in jewelry sales, buying and selling antiques and collectibles. 

Charleston jeweler to lead SCJA

The South Carolina Jewelers Association (SCJA) is proud to announce the election of Rex McClure as President. The announcement was made at the association’s annual meeting in Myrtle Beach.

Rex McClure is President of Southern Gold Jewelry, Inc. dba Sohn and McClure Jewelers in Charleston, South Carolina.  He began his jewelry making career in Wichita Falls, Texas, cutting stones, mineral collecting and making Indian style jewelry from silver and turquoise.  His best friend’s parents had a rock shop called Lovelace Lapidary, and they were often there throwing rocks at each other and playing chess.  An old Choctaw Indian named Ray Childress worked there and taught him some basic jewelry making.  He helped the owner at the Tucson and Quartzite Gem and Mineral shows and he was an avid tourmaline collector along with other minerals.
