Charleston jeweler to lead SCJA

The South Carolina Jewelers Association (SCJA) is proud to announce the election of Rex McClure as President. The announcement was made at the association’s annual meeting in Myrtle Beach.

Rex McClure is President of Southern Gold Jewelry, Inc. dba Sohn and McClure Jewelers in Charleston, South Carolina.  He began his jewelry making career in Wichita Falls, Texas, cutting stones, mineral collecting and making Indian style jewelry from silver and turquoise.  His best friend’s parents had a rock shop called Lovelace Lapidary, and they were often there throwing rocks at each other and playing chess.  An old Choctaw Indian named Ray Childress worked there and taught him some basic jewelry making.  He helped the owner at the Tucson and Quartzite Gem and Mineral shows and he was an avid tourmaline collector along with other minerals.

DCA earns re-accreditation

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) - The Diamond Council of America (DCA) has been re-accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). The DETC’s Accrediting Commission took the action at a meeting on June 14.

“Accreditation is a reliable indicator of the value and quality of distance education that an institution offers,” wrote DETC Executive Director Leah K. Matthews in a letter announcing the decision. “In receiving renewal of accreditation, DCA has demonstrated its commitment to educational standards and ethical business practices that assure quality, accountability, and improvement in higher education.”

Donna Baker resigns as President and CEO of GIA

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) – The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Board of Governors has announced that due to differing views on the direction of GIA, Donna M. Baker has resigned as President and CEO of the Institute. At the request of the Board of Governors, board chair Susan M. Jacques, President and CEO of Borsheims Fine Jewelry and Gifts, will be interim President and CEO while the board conducts a search for a new executive.
