GIA welcomes first Richard T. Liddicoat Postdoctoral Research Associate

Dr. Karen Smit joins New York laboratory

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) - Continuing its decades-long history of advanced gemological research and education, GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has selected the first associate in the Richard T. Liddicoat Postdoctoral Research program. Participants in the program will examine fundamental issues related to diamonds, colored stones, pearls and instrument development; each position will be tailored to focus on the associate’s expertise and interest. The prestigious research position is named in honor of Richard T. Liddicoat, GIA’s former president widely considered the “Father of Modern Gemology.” The Institute’s first postdoctoral associate – Dr. Karen Smit – began her tenure at the New York laboratory in February.


IGI – North & South America – re-certified by Responsible Jewellery Council

(LONDON) - The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has announced that New York-based service industry member, the International Gemological Institute (IGI) – North & South America, has achieved re-certification by meeting the ethical, social and environmental standards established by the RJC’s Member Certification System.

Georgia Jewelers Association announces reward partnership with Crime Stoppers

(ATLANTA) - The Georgia Jewelers Association (GJA) has entered into a partnership with Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta, announced Jan Fergerson, GJA President. This partnership will, among other things, offer rewards for information leading to the arrest and indictment of persons committing crimes against the jewelry community.

GIA Board welcomes new Governors Tom Moses and Elliot Tannenbaum

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) – The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Board of Governors inducted Thomas M. Moses, who was also named executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer for GIA, and Elliot Tannenbaum, senior principal of Leo Schachter Diamond Group (LS Group), during the board’s November 2013 meeting in Carlsbad. Moses and Tannenbaum join the 16 other governors in directing the strategy of the Institute and serving as stewards of the public interest.
