On May 13, 2010, Bill Brundage of Brundage Jewelers in
Terry Chambers of Prospect Jewelers in Prospect, KY, a member of the local group, received the alert and told the local police department, who came to her store just before the suspects arrived. The St. Matthews Police Department was also alerted and responded. During discussions by police with the suspicious male, burglar tools and a UPS uniform were found in his car, which contained another male suspect. Following further inquiry, the suspects were found to be serial thieves wanted in two states, and the suspects were taken into custody. Property valued in excess of $100,000 was recovered.
Recommendations: Bill Brundage says: “Jewelers who are members of local networks must remember to keep their contact information and e-mail addresses current with the network leader.” He also wisely recommends that jewelers need to tell the leader when suspicious incidents occur, and shouldn’t keep this information to themselves.
Terry Chambers says: “Every owner, jeweler and store manager in the country should take this lesson to heart and set up these early warning systems that will help protect everyone in our industry. Where safety and the security of our families and employees are involved, no one should think about holding back involvement due to any thought of competition.”
