(NEW YORK) - Jewelers of America (JA), the national trade association for businesses serving the fine jewelry retail marketplace, has announced several changes to its national retailer design competition – held annually at the JA New York Winter Show – which include a new name, more award categories and expanded eligibility requirements. Now titled “The ACE Awards,” the competition will recognize JA retail members who exhibit artistry, creativity and excellence in jewelry design.
“The 2011 ACE Awards will mark the 21st year of Jewelers of America’s retailer design competition, and the time was right to expand the reach of the contest, which is the only national platform that showcases the craft and creativity of independent jewelers,” says Director of Education & Member Services David Peters. “The ACE Awards will more comprehensively reflect the remarkable jewelry available from JA-member stores nationwide.”
Entering its third decade, JA’s National Retailer Design Competition was previously open only to JA members who had won the design competitions of JA state or regional partner jewelry associations. The ACE Awards will be open to applications from all members of the national association. In The ACE Awards, first-place winners from JA’s regional partner jewelry associations will compete along side the “at large” entries of members who wish to submit their original jewelry pieces but did not enter regional partner jewelry association competitions.

Expanded Categories & Awards
The ACE Awards features expanded and restructured awards categories as well. Members can now submit jewelry for Women’s Jewelry categories at a variety of price points, in addition to Men’s Jewelry, Silver Jewelry and Alternative-Metals categories. A panel of experienced industry judges will determine winners; pieces are judged based on overall design, marketability, practicality/wearability and quality of manufacture.
In addition to expanded categories, there are more awards to be won. The ACE Award entrants will vie for first, second and third-place ACE Awards for each of the six competition categories; the “Buyers’ Choice” ACE Award for each of the six competition categories, based on votes by JA New York attendees; and the “Buyers’ Choice – Best of Show” ACE Award for the piece that receives the highest number of “Buyers’ Choice” votes.
The competition is held annually in conjunction with the JA New York Winter Show in New York, and JA is committed to bringing national media attention to all competition participants. In addition to the display of their jewelry pieces at the JA New York Show and the ACE Award trophy, winners are highlighted at JA’s website, www.jewelers.org; JA promotes the winners to all major and international trade media; and winners receive press releases for promotion to their local media outlets.
