Six tips your postal carrier would tell you... if only you’d ask

Best shipping practices courtesy of Jewelers Mutual

(NEENAH, Wis.) - With the holidays around the corner and inventories on the slim side, many jewelers will be using just-in-time shipping to bring in exactly what the customer ordered.

Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, which insures more jewelry businesses in the United States than any other carrier, reminds you that Registered Mail through the United States Postal Service (USPS) continues to be the safest way to ship jewelry, with USPS Express Mail close behind.

But your postal carrier shakes her head at some of the mistakes that jewelers make. Here are a few tips she’d offer, if only you’d ask.

  1. Double box the jewelry item and apply enough mailing tape to keep the package secure as its thrown, bumped, and tossed from one post office to the next.
  2. Don’t tempt the postal staff by using jewelry terms on the label.
  3. Write legibly or, better yet, create the label online at usps.com, so they’ll be able to read the address. The USPS offers you a nice discount when you create the label and pay postage online. You can even save the address for future use.
  4. Double check the address and don’t forget to include North, South, East or West. That makes a big difference. And include the suite number!
  5. For Express Mail, the USPS will pick up your postage-paid, addressed packages. Just let them know you need a FREE carrier pickup via usps.com by 2 a.m. the day of pickup. You can even schedule regular, on-going pickups.
  6. When receiving packages, take a couple minutes to make sure that a) all packages are addressed to you, b) the right number of packages were delivered, and c) the packages aren’t damaged. If the package appears damaged or tampered with, let the deliverer know before they leave so they can report it immediately.

Jewelers Mutual believes so strongly in the security of the USPS, that its Jewelers Block and Jewelers Standard policies automatically include $100,000 of insurance for Registered Mail shipments and $25,000 for Express Mail.
