The segment titled “Non-Diamonds Girls’ Best Friend?” aired Wednesday, February 17 and included on-site footage of IGI’s New York laboratory. IGI President and CEO Jerry Ehrenwald, G.G., A.S.A., was featured as an expert.
Ehrenwald, who is frequently quoted in the consumer media and used as a resource for stories related to diamonds, gemstones and fine jewelry, spoke about the characteristics of a diamond and noted, “there’s no gemstone that has the brilliance, the scintillation, the fire, the sparkle that a diamond brings to the eye.”
IGI worked with the show’s producers from the segment’s inception and provided three IGI-certified rings that were taken around the city to test if consumers could tell the difference between a diamond and two diamond simulant engagement rings. About 38 percent of the consumers quizzed mistook the simulants for natural diamond, demonstrating the importance of independent certification for consumers.
