An active participant in the jewelry industry, Joe was formerly the president of Atlanta-based Downs Safe and Lock Company, he served on the board of directors of the Southern Jewelry Travelers Association for many years, was a former member of the 24 Karat Club Southeastern United States and was a strong supporter of many state jewelers associations throughout the southeast. He was a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church.
