All applications must by submitted by Oct. 30

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) – The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) kicked off its 2011 scholarship season in June with more education opportunities available than ever, including two new $10,000 awards from Tiffany & Co. There are 140-plus opportunities for students to receive funding to help them pursue a career in the gem and jewelry industry.

GIA Scholarships are available for On Campus and Distance Education programs, including nearly 70 to commemorate the Institute’s 80th anniversary and several On Campus awards for GIA’s international locations (Thailand, India and London). They cover a variety of programs, such as jewelry manufacturing arts, the Graduate Gemologist and Accredited Jewelry Professional programs and pearl and lab classes.

“There are so many talented people with a love for gems and jewelry who don’t have the financial resources for gemological education,” said Bev Berthoty, GIA Institute Relations manager. “Helping these scholarship recipients become professionals who can serve their clients and the industry with their expertise, is yet another way GIA manifests its mission to protect the public trust.”

The new Tiffany & Co. Scholarships can be used for any of GIA’s education programs, depending on the student’s interests and goals.

“We did not put any restrictions on these awards so they would be available to as many students as possible,” said Mike Kowalski, president and CEO of Tiffany & Co. “We believe that a successful company has a responsibility to the greater community, whether that be concern for the environment and human rights practices or helping individuals become successful in the gem and jewelry industry, as is the case with these scholarships.”

Applications must be completed and returned by Oct. 30. A list of all available scholarships, applications and instructions can be found at www.gia.edu/scholarships.
