(NEW YORK) - Jewelers of America (JA), the national trade association for businesses serving the fine jewelry retail marketplace, has announced the launch of “Cracking the Code: A Guide to Jewelers of America’s Code of Professional Practices.” “Cracking the Code” is a three-section guide that shows JA Members how to use JA’s Code of Professional Practices to build their business and increase profitability, customer satisfaction and customer retention. It is part of the JA website’s new eLearning Center at www.jewelers.org/elearning/.
“‘Cracking the Code’ will help bring our Code of Professional Practices to life for JA businesses,” says President and CEO Matthew A. Runci. “The online guide makes the connection between the everyday business decisions that improve our members’ bottom lines and the ethical, social and environmental practices within the Code of Professional Practices.”
JA’s Code of Professional Practices is in keeping with the association’s mission to increase consumer confidence in the jewelry industry by advocating professionalism and adherence to high standards. As a condition of membership, members must commit annually to incorporate the Code’s practices into their business practices. “Cracking the Code” is a simple guide that helps members easily accomplish this.
“Cracking the Code” is geared toward business owners and managers who are encouraged to review it at their convenience and then share knowledge with staff at meetings, as handouts or in training sessions. It is divided into three sections:
• Living the Code: Provides information on specific practices within JA’s Code, then offers strategies on following those practices.
• Communicating the Code: Offers information on how to use JA’s Code - along with existing member guidance - to communicate to customers, media and others about responsible business issues.
• Beyond the Code: Provides an overview of the Responsible Jewellery Council and looks at how JA Members can use JA’s Code as a bridge toward RJC Membership.
“Cracking the Code” was developed with input from JA’s Ethical Initiatives Committee (EIC), whose members had this to say about using the online guide in their stores:

It will be a good training tool for all staff and management in small and large organizations,” says EIC Member John Hayes, owner of Goodman’s Jewelers in Madison, WI.
