The sides of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse are adorned with a black pearl shell species called pinctada margaritifera. Kovel’s pearls and pearl shells are grown in the waters off the islands of Tahiti. Craftsmen select only the proper pearl shell curvature for each of their inlaid jewelry creations before cutting and individually hand shaping and finishing each one.

Kovel creates their mother of pearl inlay jewelry using only the best older Tahitian black pearl shells that were part of a sustainable pearl growing culture. Nothing is wasted. The older shells are larger and thicker than the newer harvests and consequently have a deeper luster.

The clarity and purity of the water and the island’s remoteness produces in these pearl shells and pearls the world’s highest luster of pink, green and peacock overtones. According to Dr. Kovel, Tahiti also seems to have the best blend of organic and inorganic salts in it’s waters which the pearl mollusk incorporates into the making of its nacre.
